Best time to travel

The best time to travel to Uganda is outside the rainy seasons. It is best to visit Uganda from June to September. During these periods the weather is mainly dry and sunny, making it easier to spot wildlife such as mountain gorillas and chimpanzees. The trails are also more accessible for hiking and other activities. You can still expect some local showers, but that is unavoidable. Late May and early June are perfect months to travel outside the high season, which means the parks are less busy and the experience is unique.

What kind of people is this trip suitable for?

This trip is suitable for everyone. You can go hiking, safari, bird watching and much more adventure. So there is something for everyone!

However, we do recommend some travel experience. If you haven’t visited Africa before, we would recommend a self-drive in South Africa or Namibia to get a feel for the continent first. This helps you travel more comfortably and assess situations better.

Are the included activities mandatory?

Feel free to skip activities or switch for another option. This is your journey and you can customize it to your own preference. We believe that the included activities provide a pleasant variation in how you spend your day. With these activities you will experience how diverse and varied Uganda is. There are many more activities to choose from, but it’s also important to set aside time for relaxation.

Is Uganda safe?

Although many travelers in Uganda drive around with a private guide, we felt very comfortable driving through Uganda ourselves. You will certainly attract some attention in the car (without a guide), but the people are generally friendly and helpful. With a little common sense and not traveling after sunset, you run little risk.

How are the roads?

Driving in Uganda can be adventurous and requires some adjustment, but with the right preparation and caution you will enjoy crossing this country.

Most of the roads you will drive on are main roads, which are well maintained and asphalted. There are also a number of unpaved roads, where you will encounter many potholes. On these roads you drive less fast and you are alert.

Is the gorilla trek physically intensive?

The gorilla trek certainly requires some physical effort, you descend on the outward journey and have to walk back up the mountain after the encounter. How intensive this is depends on how quickly you find the gorillas. You can find a family of gorillas after half an hour of descending into the jungle, but it can also take 1.5 hours before you encounter them. So be prepared for a steep climb.

How do I prepare for the gorilla trek?

We have listed the most important points to prepare for:

  • Bring gloves from home, many trees have annoying spines and pricks, you don’t want to touch them with your bare hands.
  • Wear an outfit that covers your entire body
  • Bring a face mask (mandatory) to protect both the gorilla and yourself against communicable diseases
  • Good walking shoes
  • 1.5 liters of water per person, because you don’t know how long your trek will last (Lunch is included)
  • Make use of the ‘porters’. For $20 someone will help you descend, climb up and catch you if you go down. In short, someone who makes the adventure a lot more enjoyable. It also contributes to nature conservation, because you create work for the local population, which is essential for the survival of the gorillas you will visit.

Is the gorilla trek worth it?

Absolutely! A gorilla trek in Uganda is an unforgettable and unique experience that connects you deeply with nature and these majestic animals. It gives you the chance to spend an hour in the wilderness with these endearing animals. This experience will stay with you forever and is well worth the money.
