Namibia selfdrive

What adventurer doesn’t like to separate themselves from the crowd?

Those who would like to escape the crowd have found a dream destination in Namibia. With approximately 2.5 million inhabitants in a country 20 times larger than the Netherlands, Namibia is one of the most sparsely populated countries in the world. You can drive for hours through the desert here without meeting anyone. Unless you have found your favorite shrub during a sanitary stop, then it suddenly seems like high season.

This tour takes you to beautiful destinations in Namibia where you can enjoy the beautiful desert, exciting activities and wonderful safaris.

Your journey starts in the bustling capital Windhoek, after which you quickly head towards one of Namibia’s most iconic locations: Sossusvlei. Here you will find impressive, meter-high red sand dunes that are a paradise for hikers. Climb the dunes for a phenomenal view that you won’t find anywhere else. At the end of the road you can reach Deadvlei by 4×4 or a shuttle, a surreal landscape you don’t want to miss.

The next destination is the enchanting Swakopmund, definitely one of our favorites in Namibia. In the evening you can relax here and stroll through the picturesque streets and enjoy delicious dishes in cozy restaurants, accompanied by a refreshing weizen beer. During the day, Swakopmund offers a range of exciting activities: skydiving over the desert, kayaking among seals, racing over the dunes on a quad bike and much more. With a wide range of adventures, there is something for everyone, so you can easily spend a few days here.

After Swakopmund you start the safari part of the trip. In Damaraland you will stay in a beautiful location where you can enjoy the wilderness with a bit of luxury. From here you can go on an excursion to track down the impressive rhinos and desert elephants.

From Damaraland you make the journey to Etosha National Park. Perhaps Namibia’s most famous national park and the place to spot game. Rhinos, cheetahs, lions, elephants and leopards. The park is full of your favorite animals. There is also plenty to spot for birdwatchers, with more than 340 different bird species. Based on your wishes and the time of travel, we will select the accommodations for you. So you can start looking for your favorite animals early in the morning.

After an amazing safari with special encounters, you still have a few days left in this tour through Namibia. You continue on the road to Otjiwarongo. From here you can visit the Waterberg Plateau National Park. Put on your hiking shoes and hike to the top of this mountain for a beautiful view over the endless valley.

As a finishing touch, we have a wonderful surprise to end your tour spectacularly: an overnight stay at the Cheetah Conservation Fund (CCF). Here you can participate in various ethical activities to admire the majestic cheetahs up close. But that’s not all – you spend the night at this beautiful location and enjoy a delicious included dinner. All this ensures that you can fully enjoy your unforgettable adventure through Namibia. A perfect end to a trip full of unique experiences!

Namibia awaits you with its breathtaking nature and unforgettable adventures!

General information

Discover the highlights of Namibia in this 17-day selfdrive tour. Carefully put together for you taking into account the travel time between the destinations. Namibia’s rugged landscape provides options for hikers, nature lovers and adventure seekers.

Best time to travel:

We recommend visiting Namibia from April to October. This is the dry winter period, when the weather is mild and pleasant, with cooler nights and warm days. It can get quite hot in the summer months of Namibia, so it is best not to travel in December and January. April and May are quieter months, but the rainy season ends shortly before. This makes it more difficult to spot animals, but it is significantly quieter in the parks. The further into the year you go, the drier it becomes. As a result, the animals are often found near water sources during the dry season, which makes wildlife spotting easier.

A night under the stars

Sleeping outside is one of the nicest things in Africa. The Namibian desert is one of the best places for stargazing. Due to the low population density, there is no light pollution. Ideal conditions for rolling out of bed and gazing at the stars. Is there a better way to fall asleep?

Kalahari African Wild Dog Conservation Project

For every traveler who travels to Namibia through us, we make a donation to the Kalahari African Wild Dog Conservation Project (KAWDCP). Their aim is to maintain a healthy African wild dog population, also outside protected reserves and national parks. They do this, among other things, by collecting information about this endangered species. Through research, detecting and combating diseases that are transmissible from domesticated animals to wild animals (and vice versa). Especially by working together with the local population. Do I need experience with selfdrive travel?

Namibia is a good destination if you have no selfdrive experience yet. Due to its limited population density, Namibia is quieter than many other African countries. A beautiful destination with beautiful sunsets, impressive safari locations and beautiful landscapes.

Do I need a lot of driving experience for a trip through Namibia?

It is not a requirement to have a lot of driving experience for this trip. The roads are generally of good quality and there is not too much traffic. You do drive on the left side of the road, but you get the hang of it in no time. There are a number of moments during the journey where you spend 4-5 hours on the road. It can be nice if you can alternate driving with someone. The costs of an extra driver for the rental car are not high. So this is a good option to consider.

Can I drive to Deadvlei by 4x4 myself?

Yes you can! In fact, we can definitely recommend it if you like a bit of adventure.

The car you drive is a 4×4, which gives you extra grip and power. When you pick up the car you will receive a detailed explanation of how to deal with this. Even if you have no experience with a 4×4 yet, this is no problem. The most important thing is that before you drive into the deep sand you reduce the tire pressure to about 1.4 bar. Don’t forget to increase your tire pressure at a gas station before you hit the paved roads.

Can I travel with a roof tent?

Of course! Some say this is the only way to explore Namibia. If you want to take camping to the next level, our Namibia tour with roof tent is ideal. Keep an eye on our website for more information about this tour.

Can I also book activities?

We have not yet included any activities on this tour. We can add many of the above-mentioned activities to your trip for you. Every traveler is unique and likes different outings and adventures, which is why the activities are not yet included. After all, not everyone wants to skydive, but we are happy to help you make the trip completely according to your wishes.

How do I pay in Namibia?

In big cities and tourist places you can almost always pay with your debit/credit card. Think of the supermarket or souvenirs in Swakopmund, for example. But when you are in more remote places, it is wise to have cash on you. This way you can easily buy nice souvenirs along the way or give a tip to people who help you. This way you are prepared for anything!

How do I navigate Namibia?

When renting the car you can choose to add navigation.

You can also use the navigation on your own phone for this. Namibia is clear and there is no maze of roads where you can easily get lost. It is advisable to download the route offline in advance. This way you can easily find your way even in the most remote places.
